A LITTLE HOMEWORK BEFORE THE CUDDLES

Three Steps to Get Ready

Book the first veterinary visit.
Schedule an appointment with your veterinarian before your kitten's pickup date. Your kitten must be examined within 72 hours of arriving home under your purchase agreement. Let the clinic know you are bringing home a new Maine Coon kitten and will have vaccination and other records available. If you have other pets, ask whether your vet recommends keeping the new kitten separate until that first exam. After the appointment, follow the agreement's instructions for having the clinic send its exam notes directly to me. If you have concerns in the first days, contact your veterinarian rather than waiting for the scheduled visit.
Gather the things your kitten actually needs.
Start with a secure carrier, a litter box and familiar pellets, stainless-steel food and water bowls, their familiar food, a bed or comfortable resting spot, scratching surfaces and a few safe toys. A grooming comb, brush and appropriate nail clippers are useful for a long-haired kitten. You don't need expensive versions of everything or every product in my suggested shop. Have essentials in place before pickup, and keep the initial setup simple so your kitten can easily find food, water and the litter box.
Prepare a quiet decompression room.
Choose a small, secure bedroom or bathroom for your kitten's first days. Include a cozy bed, covered hiding place, litter box, food, fresh water and a few toys. Check that windows and doors close securely, cords and small swallowable items are put away and unsafe plants or chemicals are inaccessible. Keep things peaceful when you first arrive home. Let your kitten explore at their own pace and come to you when they feel ready rather than introducing everyone at once. A smaller space also lets you monitor eating, drinking and litter-box habits while they settle in.
Plan introductions to resident pets.
Give your new kitten a separate space initially. Allow pets to become familiar with each other's scent by exchanging bedding or blankets before meeting face-to-face. Once everyone seems comfortable, try short, supervised visual introductions. Do not force direct contact or leave a new kitten alone with another pet until interactions are consistently calm. Take additional time if one pet is hiding, growling, chasing or becoming overwhelmed. Follow your veterinarian's advice about separation after arrival and any health concerns.
Confirm pickup, payment and records.
As go-home day approaches, we'll confirm the date, meeting location and any agreed travel arrangements. Review your signed purchase agreement and have the remaining balance available in the agreed form at pickup. Make sure you have a secure carrier, your emergency vet's contact information and an appointment booked for the required 72-hour exam. Keep copies of the paperwork and ask me about anything you don't understand before traveling.

WHAT YOUR BABY KNOWS RIGHT NOW

Let's keep things familiar...

Their Food & Litter Routine

A new home is a big change. Starting with familiar food, water bowls and litter can help your kitten find their routine while they settle in.

What's on the menu?

My kittens are raised eating Iams Hairball Control dry food and Friskies Poultry Pâté canned food. You'll receive some of their familiar food in your go-home supplies. If you'd like to switch brands, transition gradually by mixing in a little of the new food at a time.

They are also used to metal water bowls. Keep fresh water easy to find.

A little litter-box familiarity

The kittens use the Breeze litter-box system with pine/horse pellets. Start with the familiar pellets, then slowly introduce your preferred litter if you decide to switch. Set the box in a quiet, accessible spot.

I can also send home a little familiar pellet dust, if you would like to add some to the new box so your kitten recognizes the scent.

A Few Very Important Reminders

Little things that make a big difference when your kitten comes home. Tap a question to read more.

What happens with TICA registration?
Your registration paperwork depends on the arrangement in your signed agreement. If your kitten goes home under SpaySecure, the required spay or neuter must be completed by the contractual deadline before the registration papers are released. If the kitten is altered before pickup under your agreement, the paperwork is provided according to those terms. Keep copies of your surgery documentation and let me know when the procedure is complete if you have a SpaySecure arrangement. Please check your contract for the specific deadlines and conditions that apply to your kitten.
Why do I need to book a veterinarian within 72 hours?
Your kitten's first veterinary appointment is an important part of the transition home and is required by your purchase agreement. Book it before pickup so you aren't scrambling for an appointment once your kitten arrives. Bring the records and any questions you have about feeding, litter-box habits, vaccinations and future preventive care. Have the veterinary clinic email its examination notes directly to me, as outlined in your agreement. If your kitten is showing concerning symptoms before the appointment, call your veterinarian promptly instead of waiting.
Can I change my kitten’s food?
Yes, but I strongly encourage you to begin with what your kitten already knows: Iams Hairball Control dry food and Friskies Poultry Pâté canned food. You'll receive some familiar food when you pick up your kitten. Moving homes is already a big adjustment, so avoid switching every part of their routine at once. If you want a different brand, start by mixing a small amount of the new food with the familiar food and gradually increase it over several days while watching appetite and stool. If your kitten has persistent vomiting, diarrhea or refuses food, contact your veterinarian for guidance.
What litter should I start with?
Your kitten is already litter trained using a Breeze-style system with pine or horse pellets. Starting with the same type of litter and an easily accessible box helps preserve that familiar routine. Put the box in the quiet decompression room and keep it clean. If you prefer a different litter, add small amounts of the new material gradually and increase it over approximately a month rather than changing everything on the first day. If you'd like it, familiar used pellet dust can help your kitten recognize the scent of the new litter box.
What if my kitten hides or seems nervous at first?
A new home means unfamiliar people, smells, noises and routines. Even a confident kitten may hide, sleep more or act hesitant during the first few days. Set up their quiet room, offer food and water where they can easily find them, and provide a soft resting spot and a place to hide. Sit nearby, speak gently and allow the kitten to approach you rather than pulling them out or insisting they be held. Try keeping feeding, play and quiet times predictable. Every kitten adjusts differently; contact your veterinarian if you are concerned about eating, drinking, elimination or signs of illness.
How do I introduce my kitten to other pets?
Start with a separate room for the new kitten and keep introductions slow. Exchange bedding or blankets first so the pets can investigate each other's scent without direct contact. Progress to brief, supervised meetings only when everyone is settling comfortably. Give the resident pets their own feeding areas, resting places and litter boxes, and make sure your kitten always has somewhere to retreat. If there is chasing, fear or aggression, separate them and return to an earlier step. Don't leave a kitten unsupervised with another animal until you're confident they are safe together.
Watch this helpful introduction video ↗
How should I handle grooming and scratching?
Maine Coons have long coats that benefit from consistent, gentle grooming. Introduce the comb, brush and nail clippers gradually using short, positive sessions rather than trying to do everything at once. Pay attention to areas prone to tangling, and ask a groomer or veterinarian if you're unsure how to handle a mat. Provide stable scratching posts or boards in areas your kitten likes to spend time. If they scratch furniture, gently redirect them to an appropriate surface. Please do not declaw your kitten. Nail trimming, scratching surfaces and optional nail caps are alternatives.
What should pickup day look like?
Before pickup, confirm our agreed meeting place, travel arrangements and the remaining payment under your purchase agreement. Bring an appropriately sized, secure carrier, and keep your kitten safely contained for the entire trip. Once home, go directly to their prepared quiet room. Let them discover the litter box, food and water at their own pace, and avoid a big welcome party or immediate introductions to all the resident pets. Keep the first few days predictable. Your kitten's personal records and specific health information will be shared privately with you.
What is optional in the Kitten Supply Shop?
Everything in the shop is a personal suggestion, not a required purchase list. I've included products and little extras that I like, plus familiar food and litter options for families who want an easy starting point. You can use different brands and buy from different retailers. The priority is a safe carrier, appropriate food, fresh water, a familiar litter setup, a quiet resting space and a few basic enrichment and grooming supplies. Feel free to browse the fun extras after those essentials are covered.
