https://www.wisdompanel.com/app/s/n9lgz0sPenny has 2 copies of MDR1 Medication Sensitivity. She will be bred to male with zero copies, which will result in all kitten’s having 1 copy of the gene.
Penny has two copies of the MDR1 Medication Sensitivity variant and “will likely have an altered response to certain medications….”
“While further research is needed, the medications currently known to pose a risk include: Acepromazine, Butorphanol, Doxorubicin, Doramectin, Emodepside, Eprinomectin, Erythromycin, Ivermectin, Loperamide, Milbemycin, Moxidectin, Paclitaxel, Rifampin, Selamectin, Vinblastine, Vincristine. Please note that while some antiparasitic medications are considered safe for cats with the MDR1 variant when used according to labeled instructions (e.g. ivermectin, milbemycin oxime), others may cause adverse reactions if ingested by mouth (e.g. selamectin, imadocloprid, fluralaner) and some, particularly eprinomectin-containing products, are not recommended for use in cats with the MDR1 variant. “
“Cats with one copy of the variant are considered carriers and are usually not at risk of developing the disorder.”
So what does this mean for her kittens? Since they have 1 copy, they are not likely to develop the disorder but as precaution, simply let your vet know that they have 1 copy of the gene and if needed, alternative medication can be used instead of the ones on the list known to cause issues. MDR1 is a common gene amongst dogs and drug makers already factor that in when making medications for animals.
Please also read this letter regarding some of our cats being carriers for certain genes, what that means for the kittens and why we choose to not eliminate certain carriers from our program.
